cross promotion and synergy

Synergy - In advertising when a brand or product has a consistent message, colour scheme, advert story and actors across many platforms we call this synergy. For example, if you were to look up the latest perfume you would see that the website, poster and TV advert will all look identical and feature the same things. This consistency is know as synergy.

Cross Promotion - This is when a product teams up with another product and they help to advertise each other.

mise-en-scene

This being one of the first shots we see, we get the understanding of what the city is like and the area in what the characters are based around. From this image we can see that they live near a beach. The beach is considered to be a family, friendly and beautiful place to visit. However, all of the connotation we link towards the beach is suddenly taken away when we see a crime happen. Especially as the crime is the murder of a child. In addition, we get an overview of what to expect. We can tell that the area is quiet and small based on the limited amount of homes we see. This helps add to the shock created as you would expect there to be minimal crimes happening and not any serious crimes such as murder.

The next shot we see focuses on the reaction of the current situation. We see the mother wearing red which gives off polysemic ideas. The first being the connotation of anger, this can be either because of being held back from getting to her lifeless son or because her son has been murdered. Furthermore, it can be argued that is is a symbol of love. The love she had for her son and is wanting to be a stereotypical caring mother and comfort him and see him.
In addition to this, we see the police officers and how they make themselves be seen as superior and in charge due to the use of uniforms making them be acknowledge and have authority. However, there is on police officer in particular who stands out. This is the one in the high visability vest suggesting that he is standing out more than the others and is in fact in charge of controlling the whole situation.

We then meet the investigators. It is evident from the first meeting of this character that he also is important and plays a major role in this situation. Due to the suit it indicates a highly qualified man who works in a business. This suggests that he wants to be taken serious and he too has authority. We can tell he is going to be involved in the investigating as hr isn't dressed how you would expect an average citizen and comes across as smart and powerful. In addition, it shows how he is out of place and possibly not from around that area due to the way he is dressed compared to everyone else.
Furthermore, due to the close up of his face we can see his facial expression as to how he is reacting to what has happened. Whilst it is his job to investigate crime scenes, he appears to look quite angry and in shock that a

cinematography - taboo

Shot distance:

  • establishing shot - crane
  • Close up of characters face when we first see who he is
  • high angle shot of people in a boat
  • low angle shot

Camera Movement:

  • handheld camera that tilts and follows character - shows his point of view and creates reality
  • tilt - revel

Depth of field:

  • deep focused

 Framing:

  • open framing when we first see the ship. This shows isolation, however, it can be argued the framing is closed due to the character being trapped between the two masks suggesting the character is experiencing conflict.
  • opening framing when with horse or looking at the setting
  • when alone its more closed framing
  • main character displayed mainly on the left. This suggests his superiority and importance
polysemy - try to contradict yourself or give different meanings of what is shown.

In the opening of "Taboo" the first shot we see is an establishing shot clearly showing the sea indicating that the person we will meet is travelling.

We begin to see a ship being displayed in an opening frame, this suggests isolation through the use of a single ship being alone in the sea. It can be argued that this is representing the character that we see by showing how he is alone, however, due to the positioning of the boat between the two masks it creates a more closed frame. This gives a polysemic view as the image now created is how the character is trapped rather than isolated. This can also be a way of showing who he is as a person suggesting that he is choosing to isolated himself simply because he
